Francesco Mariani, chef and vine grower from Umbria’s famed Montefalco region, is making biodynamic wines in his own way..

“In 2022 we decided to leave the DOC circuit, so all our wines are intentionally certified as IGT Umbria.”

-Francesco Mariani

As a certified organic winery by Codex, Raína adheres to biodynamic principles to manage their 10 hectares of vineyards, planted to Ghrecetto, Sangiovese, Trebbiano Spoletino, and Sagrantino grapes. There are no chemical herbicides, fertilizers, or synthetic pesticides. Only copper, and plant-based treatments (nettle, horsetail, wild willow, etc.) are used. Fertilization relies on biodynamic methods with horn manure and green compost. In the cellar, there are zero additives with the exception of trace amounts of SO2 before bottling, with all fermentations occurring spontaneously. The vineyard and cellar dedications echo a strong similarity to legendary Montefalco producer, and Italian wine icon, the late Paolo Bea.
